What is UN1T 7

Here is where we attempt to clarify exactly what we are and how it all came to be. We will try to keep it simple and hopefully you have already visited so will get what we are all about!

  • AUTOMOTIVE

We love all things mechanical and engineered. Whether it is 2 or 4 wheels, they all have a place here with us as you will see from the decor inside.

  • COFFEE

The universal language of 'let's have a chat'. Step in Coaltown Coffee, the local roasters and the perfect brew.

  • COMMUNITY

This is what we have built, bringing people together with the love of cool stuff, cars, bikes, sports, mental health & wellbeing.

The Journey So Far...

So the initial idea just before the pandemic was to open up our big old detailing unit to petrolheads every saturday morning for a cars and coffee style meet up. At the time there wasn't really much of a plan of how we would action this but the idea was there. Then the pandemic hit and we had to shut up shop on the detailing front. Now we could either sit at home with the rest of the world or use the time to formulate a plan and strategy of what would later become UN1T 7.

So we did the latter and work began on transforming the UN1T from a clinical detailing studio into a multipurpose workshop which would still detail but also serve coffee on the weekends to new and existing customers. Both sides to the business would be visually very different and still to this day its a massive talking point. From day 1 it was always important as a family business to treat every person who came through the door for a coffee with good service and a friendly face. This was the start of our journey into community and mental health & wellbeing through good old old social interactions (which is something severely lacking with the mobile phone generation).

Skip forward a year of opening/closing with the pandemic restrictions and it was hard to guage how people were reacting to the concept. It looked good but we could never tell if it was just a bit of a curiosity phase and would die down. Never did we imagine how amazingly people would really support the UN1T and everything we were doing. It quickly became apparent we were building a community around coffee, bikes, cars and most importantly talking which was awesome.

What better way to launch some much needed biker community than bike nights! We were among the first to actually orgnaise a bike night since the pandemic back in the early summer of 2021 and boy did it show. Well over a 100 bikes attended even while we were still under restrictions in the unit with social distancing etc. This made for a challenge but people were just happy to get back out and socialise once again.

We soon became the stopping point for riders, drivers, dog walkers and general coffee drinkers just looking for that welcome smile and a simple interaction (along with a bloody good brew). Our family (staff included) have built so many relationships with visitors to the UN1T which is a real priviledge to be part of. On many occassions we have had genuine feedback that we have been their refuge in times of low mood or loneliness which is something we never thought possible.

We started to get more involved with mental health and wellbeing by introducing monthly evening meet ups with guest speakers who had an interesting and sometimes difficult story to tell. This is something we continue to promote and have great interactions with a lot of local support groups and networks. Prostate cancer Wales/UK, Movember, Frozen Nutz and Mental Health Motorbike are some of the groups we have interacted with over the last few months.

Next up came the bar, admittedly it was a bit of a personal indulgence more than a business decision but this soon took its own path! What started as a Rum Bar with 1 Budvar tap soon became a very popular corner of the unit with possibly the best selection of beers and spirits not found anywhere else locally. We never went for brewery or pub classics, just good beers from wherever in the world they hailed and it was always important they were imported from the homeland. The way we looked at it was that if no-one else drunk anything here then we would have to so we better like it. Of course what came next was people reuquesting to use our amazing space for personal events and gatherings. This became so popular we now have held almost every type of gathering going which has been amazing to be a part of.

From private events came our events like the local small business craft markets which are held seasonally, open mic night, Oktoberfest, local rock band festival, movie themed parties, dj gigs, bike shows and various car meets. This is something we have been building on and now have many in the diary with regular dates. Check out our What's On page to have a look.

Whats next? The mental peaks hiking group, the hub, more bike events and more cars meets for starters! Moving forward with our mental health and wellbeing focused evenings they will now be named 'The ToolBox Sessions' in reference to us aiming to give people more 'tools' in form of coping strategies to deal with everyday life and challenges.
